Gas Stations

Revision at filling stations

Clean tanks and tank shafts guarantee quality and safety. Many filling stations are 30 years old and older. The new fuels mostly contain bio-components such as ethanol and bio-diesel. Water or condensation water mixes immediately with these substances, except for “Lead-free 98”.

The main causes are:

Tank cleaning is one thing, but the real problem areas are the manholes, their covers and the inner workings of the manholes.

If you still want to sell fuel in the next 20 years, you have to keep this infrastructure well maintained. Otherwise, the consequences – such as engine damage – can exceed the maintenance costs many times over.

A tank overhaul with internal cleaning every 10 years is worthwhile in any case (except for unleaded 98). Temperature fluctuations in the tank cause condensation, which combines with tiny particles on the bottom of the tank. This sludge (electrolyte) leads to deposits in the tank and in turn develops a galvanic element, which sooner or later leads to corrosion in the tank. This sludge can also develop into a fungus-like substance (primarily with diesel oil), which can lead to blockages in vehicle filters.
Particular attention should be paid to the manhole cover and the “inner workings” of a manhole at filling stations. Moisture or even water are extremely aggressive, especially in combination with gasoline gases, which leads to considerable corrosion.
Tank inspections also include checking safety equipment such as filling safety devices, vapor recovery valves and reporting to cantonal authorities.

Workflow:

Access with inspection vehicle and trailer (2 workers)
Set up workstation, cover access routes
Pumping out and temporary storage of up to 15,000 liters of oil. Removal of the sludge including its environmentally friendly disposal (depending on tank size up to 100 liters.
Cleaning and drying out the tank
Meticulously check the cleaned tank for any seizures (corrosion) or other leaks.
Leak test of the filling and venting system
Closing and filling the tank system (with residual fuel)
Function test and final check
Audit report and notification of completion to the competent authority

Refurbishment

Reasons for refurbishment:

Underground tanks: Defective double jacket of the tank (leakage indicator on alarm) Today, every underground tank must be double-walled. Corrosion damage is often the cause. These can occur both in the shaft due to water and on the outer wall of the tank due to age. Corrosion damage inside the tank is rather rare.

We offer you the solution:

Buried tanks:

In many cases, corrosion damage in the shaft can be repaired by welding holes. However, this requires the tank to be taken out of service beforehand. Holes in the inner and outer shell can only be repaired by means of coating, a tank within a tank or an inner tank shell.

New tank system

The construction of new tank systems requires careful planning. With our specialist knowledge, we accompany you through the entire process: from the initial needs analysis and the necessary clarifications regarding geology and water protection through to the planning and execution of the construction.

Whether it’s a filling station on the road, a service station for trucks and locomotives or a filling station for snow groomers at an altitude of 2,000 meters – we find the right solution for every project.

We build according to your wishes.

Decommissioning

Professional decommissioning of fuel tanks

Due to the risk of explosion, gasoline tanks may only be decommissioned by specially trained personnel. This applies to all officially approved tanks in which water-polluting liquids are stored.

The following work is carried out during decommissioning:

  • Controlled flaring of the residual gases using a Tarrei burner (image)
  • Remove residual oil and sludge from the tank
  • Flush product lines with nitrogen or water
  • For double-walled tanks with liquid monitoring, remove the antifreeze from the double wall and dispose of it in an environmentally friendly manner
  • Ensure that the tank cannot be filled by mistake, the so-called blanking of the filler neck, similar to a seal
  • Deregistering the tank with the responsible authorities

Frequently asked questions

When Do I Have to Arrange for an Internal Cleaning?

We recommend that heating oil tanks undergo an inspection with internal cleaning every 10 years.

When was the last revision?

You will find a sticker on the door to the tank which tells you when the last work was carried out on your tank.

Do I Have to Expect Additional Costs for an Inspection in Winter?

No, we will create a temporary heating system for you (a temporary oil feed for your heating).

I Filled My Tank in Spring. How many Liters Can You Extract from the Tank without Additional Costs?

Up to a maximum of 15,000 liters. However, it is important for us that you can give us as accurate information as possible about the heating oil level. This allows us to arrange the right tank trailer for the temporary storage for you. The easiest way to do this is to measure the oil level with the measuring stick.
